Oaxaca de Juárez, 1899 — Mexico City, 1991. Of Zapotec descent, he entered the Academia de San Carlos at eighteen and left it to paint on his own; in 1921 he worked in the ethnography department of the National Museum. He exhibited solo from 1926 and settled in New York in 1933, where he taught for twenty years at the Dalton School. He left twenty-one murals, among them «El canto y la música», «Revolución», «México de hoy» at Bellas Artes, the UNESCO mural in Paris and «Fraternity» at the United Nations. In 1974 he gave his pre-Hispanic collection to Oaxaca and in 1981 opened, in Chapultepec, the museum that bears his name. He received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 1964 and joined El Colegio Nacional in 1991.
