Mexico City, 1929 — 1999. The son of a Catalan father and a Yucatecan mother, he studied Spanish literature at UNAM and gave it up for painting. In 1952 he founded the Galería Prisse with Vlady and Héctor Xavier, one of the first venues of the Ruptura generation. Much of his work starts from Velázquez, whose figures he reworked with collage and found objects, as in the series «Death and Transfiguration of Queen Mariana» (1961–1963). He was a close friend of Luis Buñuel. André Breton included him in «Le Surréalisme et la peinture» (1965). He won a prize at the Paris Youth Biennale and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and made lithographs for Carlos Fuentes’s «Terra Nostra».
